When you are craving for Penang street food in Pj, there are not many choices. However, there is this one particular stall that is super famous among the locals and Penangnites. This Famous Penang Curry Mee at Retaurant  Station 8, SS2, PJ that is also previously known as Restaurant OKay, ss2. I believe change owner already.famous curry mee in kl

This stall runs by both father and son from Penang that operates at very unique hour. This will be the first time in your life that see people operating a business for 60-90 minutes only. Yup, that is correct. Only that window. Worst of all is way early in the morning. from 7am – 8.30am ONLY. They only prepare 1 pot of soup. Finish then finish. Good luck. Previously I try my luck for more than 3 times to get this pippin hot bowl.famous penang curry mee in kl

now one bowl is also cost about RM 9 for small and RM 10 for big. Big actually is quite big but now cause of inflation, food is getting very expensive. most important ingredient for Penang Curry mee is pork blood and taupok.

best penang curry mee in pjthey maintain their quality as the last I had this bowl was like 6 years ago. One of the main reason is I could not wake up. Weekend I would just prefer to sleep. however the soup is still sweet and the most important is the chili paste. Fragrant and punch with mild chili spices. Perfect!

Many of you been to Jonker Street Melaka and also take a famous mural art wall of Kiehl’s Mural art in Melaka. This famous 1405 Art Cafe at Melaka used to operate right at the Keihls mural wall. Now they have moved to this new location Taman Kota Laksamana where currently is the new hub of F&B in Melaka.

jonker street

I have never been to the their old cafe before, as their new outlet sets as a cafe ambiance by offering local food. Good is also they are one of a  Pork Free cafe in Melaka now.

Setting out the my classic palate, of course I aim on their classic local Signature kopi. @ RM 7.90 It is “kau”! Strong, with bitter end taste and not too sweet. Punch with nice dark roasty end taste.

halal cafe in melaka

Since there are many people who order their signature Royal Nyonya Laksa, lets try that out.. We can pick Choice of noodle, I picked thicker noodle Mi’xian which is my substitute to Penang style laksa noodle. Bee hoon and mee certainly do not sound right to me. Love the Soup base which is is creamy and fragrant. Chili paste given is just to enhance slightly for little spicy.

quite a unique kind of laksa and I think I am recommended you to try too. @ RM 14.90

nyonya laksa melaka

halal cafe melaka

their Nasi Lemak @ RM 14.90 certainly do caught my attention as I wonder how would the taste of this place in Melaka like. Rice seems serve with like blue pea flower colour.

Rice is fragrant with light mild end of coconut and pandan flavour. I wish that the chicken could be slightly crispier but it was how the locals like it. Sambal is on the sweet side and I guess I would rate this as a Chinese version of Nasi Lemak which I think very near to Nyonya style nasi lemak which certainly sits correctly in Melaka as they are well known for nyonya food.

coffee in melaka

If you think the rest are heavy, then their Classic Tomyum Fried Bee hoon  @ RM 8.90 is actually not too bad.

1405 art cafe melaka

Signature Salted Egg Croissant @ RM 17.90, flaky outside and inside ooze with salted egg base. Perfect to go along with coffee. It would not bee too much for a person to finish it up. Just a nice portion and ratio of the salted egg base in it.

cempedak ball in melaka

I must say that their Cempedak kuih is da bomb. Must Order. It is like muachi in punchy flavours. One of my best highlight for the day. One bite that breaks its crispy outer layer, then you reach on second layer which is like muachi texture and the filling of cempedak, is just flavourful. Do give it a try – recommended

They do sell in frozen and you can buy and take back to your origin place!

cake in melaka

Lastly, for tea time, they do have a few variety of cakes available. From their own signature crepe and tiramisu.

Michelin Guide Kuala Lumpur and Penang 2023: Bib Gourmand list

$

We all got super excited when we heard Michelin Guide Kuala Lumpur and Penang 2023 is coming to Malaysia. It is like the long waiting in a slow sailing yatch to our shore. However, the reveal of Michelin Guide Kuala Lumpur and Penang 2023 Bib Gourmand list did stunned many foodie out there.

Again, food is a very subjective manner, compare to local taste or commercialize. do bare in mind that Michelin award is at super infant stage where there are alot of so called “inspector” to grow along the years if the owner of Tan Sri is able to keep up with the cost. (mostly is government initiative, however for Malaysia is private)

The Michelin Star Revelation 2023 has selected a total of 61 restaurants in Malaysia the coveted Michelin Stars, with 34 in Kuala Lumpur and 27 in Penang.

As a Penang Kia, of course we are proud with one of a rising star eatery which is Au Jardin walked away with 2 awards. Best Young Chef and also 1 Michelin Star Restaurant.

Let me breakdown into 3 segments for you guys.

  1. Michelin Selected (More like recommended only – no awards or anything – could be potential move into Bib Gourment list in 2024 if consistancy is there. Part of Inspector spot check for year 2023)
  2. Bib Awards or Michelin Bib Gourmet – this is more for Street food, hawker, familiy style restaurant – which is a great award to have like Thailand – which is kinda Michelin Street Food Guide
  3. Official Michelin Star Awards Restaurants (that is breakdown into 1,2,3 stars) – comes with a lot of inspection like, service, table cloth, service, recommendation of food, complication of food ordering, attentiveness, technical food taste, food journey experience, knowledge of using seasonal ingredients and tons.

Lets Kicks start with Michelin Recommended.

I am sure there are alot controversies in this list for both Penang and KL. However do bare in mind that these are only recommended list ya! no awards or anything. Is more like a guide.

Below are the BiB Awards Recipients which is worth to check it out.  (means this are recognize as street version of Michelin Awards – NOT EVEN MICHELIN STAR Ya!) as they do not meet the criteria of star series however on consistancy of flavour profile yes.

Remark: I personally feel that this is a great initative to begin with, as Michelin guide certainly will take time to grow on local context. Do bear in mind that “mysteries inspector” will dine anonymously for at least 2-4 times to ensure their ratings and consistency. Year 1 food list usually not that impressive as over the years as michelin starting to grow, then yes, we will get to see more prominent food feature.

I certainly believe that Michelin have not train up 1,000 inspectors to tour around Malaysia for year one. As they certainly need to groom the talent up. (basic criteria inspector criteria read here). So for Malaysians F&B owners and operates, I can only advise you to keep your hardwork as who knows you might be rewarded on 2024, 2025. Like Thailand and SG, it takes them more than 5 years to reach where the list is today. (this is also aggressive push from the Govt side). I certainly hope that new Malaysia Govt can support this initiative also.

Michelin Bib Penang Green House Hokkien Mee

Penang street food scene have gain a notch up with the arrival of Michelin ratings in the shore of both KL and Penang. There are handful of hawker stalls being selected as Michelin Bib recipient and Penang Green House Hokkien Mee is one of them since Dec 2022

Of course with this, travelers like me would travel overseas just to hunt on the list. this have created a buzz for Michelin Street Food hunt in Penang.

When Green House Hokkien Mee was selected as the recipient it has raise alot of questionnaires on this. However, I am happy over the listing as let the undiscovered gem still remain as it is and let the commercialize be commercialize so I do not need to queue for my food.

I still think this stall is decent as once a while I would go back for a classic normal bowl of Hokkien mee. Their unique is they are one of the stall that you can choose to add on ingredients ranging from prawns, egg, intestine, roast pork and others.

I would always go for add on herbal egg and prawns. Soup wise to me is decent as more towards hint of end sweetness, chili paste that I would add in more to give me the umami spicy impact.

Overall it is okay as this stall is on the high side.

It was very random and was aiming for coffee after breakfast. Hit into google to find nearby cafe and AE Coffee was in the list with 4.9 google rating which is super impressive. Only then realize that they are new kid on the block. Operate since end 2022. I would now rate them one of the Best coffee or cafe in Penang is AE Coffee.

This is awesomely good to pair with my single Origin. best tiramisu penangOh miy goawd! Must intro you their Tiramisu@ RM 18. It is da bomb or one of the best I have come across in Penang. It is different version compare to the famous tiramisu  Narrow Marrow

This is a style by its own, topped with nice cocoa powder, and the base is soft airy light cloud mascarpone cheese and espresso sponge at the bottom with alcohol is not too heavy yet goes well flavour by itself or best pair with their coffee.
best coffee in penangMy Single origin is Guatamela. the mild fragrant body, less acidic and the aftertaste is just amazing. medium roast kind of coffee aroma stays easily 10 mins. Best! Drink while its hot is mild fruity base yet near room temperature its like chocolaty.

Certainly this is one of my favourite cafe place in Penang for a good cuppa.

One of the best cheap burger in PJ that I have come across only if their beef patty is made by themselves. Cheese is well coated onto the burger and the bun is gril to perfection. Slightly toasted and some burnt edges inside the bun.

One bite just blew your palate away. A great mixture of saltiness from the cheese, nice season beef patty, umami special caramelize onion sauce and the hint of buttery just flows in. its really good.

Next wanted to try another version is their Shimokita Cheese Burger @ RM 10. this is slightly more jucier with the sauce that they have drench on, abit more helty with some greens and tomato and with its unique hidden taste is with jalapeno.

Some adventure with your palate then this is the one to go after. I still love their signature classic.

Its been a while since you get some food which is umami. Hungry Bacon at Uptown Damansara in PJ is surprisingly one of them. An eatery run by husband and wife along with some of their family recipe is something to look after.

AS the name says, bacon as this restaurant is all about PORK!

hungry baconA cosy space for family and friends gathering. So are you a hungry bacon, stress bacon? DSCF3220hungry bacon menuMenu is not large but good enough for us to hunt. I was shared by the introductory of the menu and below are some of their signatures we ordered.hungry bacon drinksbacon roll

This is indeed very intersting when it was serve onto the table. Bacon Cones – stuffed with bacon chilli con carne &  topped with sour cream , cheese sauce, pico de galo, &  Jalapenos.

Creatively they presented it in a cones and if you do not realize it like my friends, they thought its actually a cone till I said no, its bacon wrap and perfectly baked till crispy. the flavors of this is burst with overwhelming flavors. I was told that this is their mini version of their signature best seller Nachos. One of a entree that certainly worth to order.
Definitely one of a buddy for beer.

This is also a dish worth for you to discover. Eating itself without any sides, the flavour might be too strong. Best advise to go along with its toasted bread that turns the flavour well balance. First eat might be hit with strong flavours of spices and saltiness however with bread just balance that out. Love it serve in claypot as it still grill abit along the way. We endjoyed some of the burnt edges
pork nasi kerabu

This is not your usual Nasi Kerabu. This is one of their signature Nasi Kerabu with babi percik, blue pea flower rice with solok lada, salted egg, fresh ulam, fish cracker, budu, and sambal belacan.

Beware when you pour in the sauces. It is highly advise to pour in bits by bits to suits your palate. If you pour all into the plate, the taste will be too overpowering. After addin the sauces, mix well on the rice. The best is the fresh pork lard that is added that gives you a nice balance of crips, oil fragrant and herbs. A nice plate of piggy.

pork burger

Pork Burger with Bacon , 180 gram pork patty, bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese, caramelize onions, served with US potato fries. patty is grill nicely that did not overcook it. Soft and juicy while the cheddar gives the hint of saltiness it needed. NIce and well balance.

pork steak klMighty Tomahawk is only available limited portions a day. If you are looking for something unusual, then this is another dish you can hit after. Brined 48hours and lightly smoked then, slow grill to ensure the juiciness of the meat. best pork steak pj

As you cut thru the  meat, you know its soft and juicy. Each bite is even better if you put some garlic and the sauce on top with hint of smokiness, It gives another level of flavours.
western food in klbest lava chocolate cake

Ending our meals with high note as I have less expectation of this. Most of the people overcooked it till that the lava of chocolate is not Lava’ish.

Chocolate Lava , served with 40 licks vanilla ice cream. Love the bitterness and pair well with the ice cream.

Great start for new discovery of restaurant and certainly will come back to try some of other items in the menu, one of a nice fusion western food in PJ can aim for.

Botak Pari Grill Fish at Desa Petaling, KL seems to be one of a famous stall in this neighbourhood. When I posted this suprisingly quite number of my friends know about this place. My bro was looking for a similiarity to Penang Grill fish taste we thought of trying it out and turns out to be never dissapoint.

desa petalingLooking on how botak pari operates, he seems to be only to serve fresh ingredients only. Can see that some of his worker are operating and cutting fish fresh while refilling those fish in. Do not disappoint if you see the display fish rack empty as they need to keep it fresh, it is place inside the ice box. Do ask them is any left available.

This will be a long wait and depending what time you arrive. I try to arrive before 6.30pm to enjoy the fish with less waiitng time. While if you are hungry can order the food inside the kopitiam.

Our order came after 30 minutes wait.

love the flavours of the squid as they are more thick or dence in flavour. Squid is fresh and soft yet grill to perfection. The base that they used might be a bit heavy but still spot on.

Grill fish is done to perfection. Meat is fresh and soft, burnt edges to my liking and sambal is more on the little spicy end. Those of you that cant take spicy, this fish marination might be a bit little spicy than the usual stall out there.

sambal petai recipeSambal Petai with Brinjal is pretty good. Just look at the little dry shrimps that they have been fry together. It is pretty solid flavour and the petai is fresh. Those of you do not like it will feel its overpowering. I am not a big fan of petai too, I find that they are cook right. Just nice to cover the strong taste of petai, sambal is well balance, eggplant is not too soft and a combination as such is quite nice.Restoran Botak Pari

pretty good place to come to satisfy your little crave of grill fish. Certainly this stall would be in one of my recommendation as they fair slightly better than a few stalls that I have tried in KL. Are they the best grill fish in KL? I have no idea but love to try more.

Chef Hajral maintains that native Malaysians will always miss the authentic tastes of their home, despite the prevalence of modern, simplified versions of some classic Malay dishes. For this spread, the recipes have been used for decades and handed down from a bygone era, before the invention of time-saving kitchen appliances. Chef Hajral explains that the secret to the success of these recipes is that they were passed down from generations of women who spent hours slaving over the stove to achieve the coveted “trifecta” of tenderness, richness, and consistency.

Tap Beer At Bamboo Hill, Segambut KL might be one of the first local brew beer that we can ever get. If the fact is correct, then their beer is certainly quite impressive. For both IPA and stout. Tap Room is indeed a perfect place for gatherings. A huge space that able to cater private events.bamboo hillCurrently they are at their hype as it is highly advisable to make reservation before you head over. If not you will ended up like me take chances. I waited for a spot for 45 minutes on that day as half of the section is close for private event. also was lucky cuz there are reservations that did not turn up then we took over the table. pizza in kl

I read some of the reviews that they are also well known for their pizza.  I would say if you dine in the early evening like 6pm and if weather is right, like just after rain it is a perfect place to be. Enjoy the sound of waterfall, beer on your hand and pretty decent food will be the perfect mood to end the day.

Morning sun is still bearable and if it hit afternoon, do not bother to sit outside. It is really hot unless you are like Guai lou love sun and heat then yes.

Tap Room Menu is pretty straight forward. A menu with Italy, local and American.

this is their Paperkite Stout. It is easy to drink, hint of caramel and a bit of coffee bitter end but overall it is smooth. @ RM 22.

Watermelon Meze @ RM 9 – watermelon, chuka wakame, crush peanut and Thai Dressing. Refreshing dish as order this for my niece to try.

Interesting profile as they add in fish flakesDSC00712Charming Chic is certainly a dish that fits very well with healthy person. what to eat in bamboo hillsMoonlight Pesto . I am not a big fan of pesto but this is certaily okay. The pesto herb taste is not that strong yet well balance. It is interesting as it is topped with an egg yolk, after you break it, becomes slightly creamier and balance well with the pesto. Chicken is crispy and slight juicy.ginger kl bamboo hillsFor something clasisc, Pad Krapow Rice bowl @ RM 19.80 is a worthy dish to order. Generous with chicken mince meat, topped with crispy egg is a dish that would not disappoint as it is cook flavorful. DSC00697I have read in some reviews that their food was not up in standard, again as a new F&B operator their kitchen usually will take time to stabilize. I was lucky on that day as my service and food were above my expectation.

Tap Room Bamboo hill

Tap Room Bamboo hill is certainly one of the place I would recommend for gathering and certainly do not mind to come back again for drinks and pizza. Their Tap Room Paperkite Beer could be one of the best Local beer if that is really produce in there. IPA Beer would be recommended if you do not like Stout.

Original Famous Penang Robert Char Koey Teow, PJ

I am sure many of you are as confuse as I am. is Robert Char Koey Teow a Franchise? Not only till recently a few people share with me that its actually a family chain and I was introduce to visit the Original Famous Penang Robert Char Koey Teow in Damansara Kim, PJ. To get a decent Penang Char Koey Teow in KL is not easy.

I am sure alot of you have tried Penang Char Koey Teow and of course it is down to personal taste. While He was frying, I had a quick chat with him. This Original Robert Char Koey Teow was founded by him 40 years ago under his name Robert. Currently where he is operating is the latest location he was here.

Other location you see such as Famous Robert Char Koey Teow in Section 17, is actually run by his Brother in Law which I am a regular there. Follow by generous portion economical pricing which is nephew in Kota Damansara and a few other locations are all family related.

While I was there I find it interesting that he do prepare a special dish out. Fried Koey Teow with fresh egg. I ask uncle what’s that he said you try la. Alot of his regular order that. Ended up I did order one too. I also found that his frying style is quite different and he ends the frying plate with alot of fresh taugeh in quick stir fry.

My first plate is actually very good which is his special signature with raw egg. Can see pork lard and the colour is pretty spot on. Full with wok hei with mild spiciness that I like.

Second plate which is the original seems to be dissapointing as the colour of koey teow is big different. Then do not find hint of pork lard cubes. True enough that by the look of it and the taste is alittle off. Lack of wok hei and taste is very pale. Seems there is lack of consistancy.

Of course my first time there and I plan to go back again to give it another try. While I was waiting for him, I do see alot of take away which I am sure those are all his regular.

Hai Kah Lang Seafood Noodle in Taman Cheras is already famous among the locals. Constantly they are with queue even before they got awarded with Michelin Bib Gourmand KL. According to my friend, the queue had double up and average waiting time now is about 30-90 minutes depending on your luck.

I am in love with their seafood selection as everything look so fresh. Just look at those live Si’ham, lala, and the colour of fish cut. Just Amazing. what caught my attention the strongest that I must order is the Leopard Coral Grouper. ITs a rare kind and the texture of fish will be amazing.

this is one of their main signature or best seller – Mix Seafood Noodle @ RM 25.90. I find that it is decently price with teh amount of ingredients given. Everything is super fresh and cook to perfection. Prawns, lala , all really making drool now. You get to taste to near best seafood taste you can get.

Soup base with milk on the other end is on the mild side. I find it near to very clear soup and after drinking it a while, it is actually to compensate with the fresh taste of seafood. So some people with heavy palate might find the soup is near tasteless but if you eat it carefully you can taste the mix of seafood taste.

Enjoy the noodle and don rush to finish it.

Fish texture is cook to perfection which is just nice and you can see the fish skin is thick. Collagen packed, chewy and amazing fish meat texture. Recommended.

Would I come back again? Of course if I do not need to queue. My friend taught me how to book a place to skip the queue by paying RM 8 service fee thru the app and of course I am happy to pay.

To begin with, food was never  100% perfect. After a a lot of buzz about this Heun Kee Claypot Chicken Rice at Pudu, KL from a lot of FB pages few years back that they are using Charcoal. They have been gaining its momentum. It is also a place that had been selling for the past 40 years and finally I make my way there after also they won an award of Michelin Bib Gourmand for its food consistency.

best claypot chicken rice in kl

I was told that this place do serve nostalgic taste to many people and also to many of them do not like it. As always, I went over with an open mind. To me, any stalls that use Charcoal fire certainly a win for me. However it gets tricky if the person knows how to maintain and control the fire.

chicken rice in klclaypot chicken rice I find that their cooking method is quite unique or I have never seen before. A charcoal Claypot chicken rice goes into double cooking method. Burnt from bottom then finish off with charchaol heat on the top. Then only I realise no wonder the waiting time is there. Easily a pot will take 10-15 minutes to cook base on this.

To me, a Claypot Chicken rice must have Salted fish, without it, its kinda lack a big flavour profile for me. I spread my salted fish into crumbs and mix it evenly in the pot.. After eating the first bite only understand why its nostalgic to a few people. Now I am being added into the nostalgic taste.DSC02151 Soy sauce is a perfect kind for me that gives a nice sweet salty finish that have similar taste those in Penang, hint of salted fish in each bite, is just perfect Chicken is cooked to perfection, soft tender and juicy, with lap cheong is just nice.

Their signature Pig Pepper soup and Sunday Lotus soup is not to be miss. Spot on satisfying soup

It seems that recently there is a boom of Lamb Hotpot mushrooming every where. There is one I felt that will suits to alot people for those who cannot really take strong flavours of lamb is this Hidden Lamb Pot in Chinatown is this NIAMAH HaoHong Lamb Pot in Petaling Street.

jalan Sultan, Petaling Street

To find this place might be a abit tricky cuz its a hidden restaurant as hidden in the alley as the main entrance. AT the main road, look for Toto store and right at that alley, walk in. It is even worst when the restaurant is only preparing 40 portions a day starting from 5pm – 10pm or while stock last. You know that you wont go wrong outlet as you walk into the outlet, there is a strong like lamb bak kut teh kind of smell.

This is one of a place that I would recommend to many of you especially those of you like to drink soup. It is light, flavourful and a little hint of more towards bak kut teh . Lamb is soft and juicy.

Besides that you can order add on items and turn it into like mini steamboat and continue eating. I ended refill my soup at least 5 rounds.

If you think Lamb might be too strong for you, then another option you can go for their Whisky Siew Yuk Wan Tan Mee. this is pretty spot on. Love the texture of wantan mee that cook to al dante, topped with crispy siew yuk which gives you a cracking skin bite. Meat is soft and juicy that makes it right.  I even order extra as a small portion to continue eating.

eq hotelLove the ambiance of the hotel as certainly dine in comfortable in posh settings. DSC00671

It has been a while since last posteda bout street food and to share with all of you, one of my usual favourite to go place during night street food is at Wai Sek Kai SS2. Plenty of pretty decent food, not the best but comfort food there. Stall no. 8 ,9 and 10 is the usual stalls that I would order. Stall no.8 has the Best Chinese Fried Indian Noodle.

A kind of taste which is quite nostalgic for me, quite Penang style cuz this is run by Penang family over 30 years already, I aslo started to eat this stall since I studied in KL many moons ago.

They are one more consistency for its Fried rice, char Koey teow and even Chiense Indian Fried noodle. Love their fried noodle, as they have their own special gravy that cook along, fried till abit moist to dry, hint of sweet end, mild spicy, and its just a perfect place

A Perfect place for simple nice food. At times there are hit and misses, overall its still good.
