Kanna Curry House @ Section 17, PJ

By working in this area for long time, and whenever my colleague craving for banana leaf rice, we would always end up in Kanna Curry House which located in Section 17.

Kana Curry House (1)

Be advise to come here earlier to avoid crazy crowd and also parking problems. Most of them would double park and parking would be havoc especially if you do come on Friday lunch time.

Kana Curry House (2)

Kana Curry House (3)

Kana Curry House (4)

An array of curry dishes for you to choose or hunt. If not those server will bring a tray and walk around while you can choose from it.

Kana Curry House (5)

Kana Curry House (6)

Some of my colleague love their deep fried squid and fried chicken which you can pick from this area. Fried fresh.

Kana Curry House (7)

Each table is placed with 3 different types of curry. From fish, to classic dal and chicken curry.

Kana Curry House (8)

They used to serve banana leave rice on a actual banana leave as over the years they have change the gimmick to synthetic paper. An order of Banana Leaf rice is serve with rice, and 3 sides at the side which is usually minty cucumber, mix vegetable and special sauce bitter gourd (each outlet varies in items)

Kana Curry House (9)

Another traditional method for you to dine is by using your hand. Soup is another version that you can extra order.

Kana Curry House (12)

I find this place is totally overrated and of course they still do have their regular lovers like my colleagues. Sri Suria still remains one of my favourite which located at SS1.

Now eating banana leaf rice is no longer cheap. It easily cost from RM 8 – RM 30 per person depending on what items you add on.

Mei by Fat Spoon @ Desa Sri Hartamas, KL

I have heard so much about this place – Mei by Fat Spoon. Great comments from my boss, to my colleague and friends only till I decided to pay a visit to this place as we do not want to go too far for lunch.

Mei (1)

The appearence on the outside seems misleading with its pure white wall with glass as the frontage and 3 little garden pots sit right at the front do give the impressions that they are not open. As you drive pass by, do take a peek into it. :)

Mei (2)

Love the interior which is minimalist classy with bright white brick with wooden table and chairs.

Mei (3)

Mei (4)

Mei (5)

It is a Japanese Fusion Dining menu and price might seems a little steep for the ambiance and style of it.

Mei (6)

Tried their Lemon Grass Tea Cooler as the weather is pretty hot out there and turns out to be pretty refreshing, @ RM 10, and my friend she tried Iced coffee with Ice Cream @ RM 13 as there is nothing much to shout about it.

Mei (7)

Looking through the menu up and down, ended up I choose Light Braise Beef Short Ribs & Radish with Rice (Mirin Sauce) @ RM 18 turns out to be pretty good. Beef is cook its tenderness, juicy and pack with flavour. A simple dish yet delightful.

Mei (8)

Mei (9)

Next with a bit of fusion food range which is their Mushroom Cream Spaghettini @ RM 19 – shimeiji mushroom, oyster mushroom in a light cream sauce topped with seaweed and garlic chips.

Mei (11)

One of their signature dessert in the menu is Cempedak Spring Rolls @ RM 15 served with Vanilla Ice cream. No doubt it taste pretty good with pungent flavour of cempedak and with 5 strips and at that price, oh well, its pretty expensive.

Mei (12)

In their menu, which I did not try is their pretty impressive Salmon range rice where many recommended, and maybe will swing by again next round.

Just need to dig a little deep into your pocket for such a simple comfort food.

Klang Bak Kut Teh @ Restaurant Chow Kiat

Klang is another town that is pack with great food. Just done a photoshoot in the morning and suddenly thought of why not we have breakfast at Klang with their famous Bak Kut Teh. Of course Rif and Sue Lynn then bring me to one of their favourite place.

Klang Bkt (1)

Restaurant Chow Kiat is one of a famous Bak Kut Teh place that is pretty well known to the folks around the area. Most of them are regular and every one in Klang speaks Hokkien.

Klang Bkt (2)

Klang Bkt (3)

For this shop, they are famous for their big bone and also chicken feet.

Klang Bkt (4)

Klang Bkt (5)

Its a place which is pack with families and mature folks. Alot of them do bring their own tea leaves for their drinking pleasure while eating their pippin hot Bak Kut Teh.

Klang Bkt (6)

This is our Big Bone with a great amount of fats and also meat is super soft. Another bowl is a well balance of meat and fats.

Klang Bkt (7)

Lets eat. Classic Bak Kut Teh Style in this ship is by serving a small bowl with limited soup in it. Best of all is a free refill of soup where you can keep on requesting. Soup is slightly clear and taste of mild herbs and dark soy sauce is there (or I might be wrong) as I have stronger palate for my Bak Kut Teh where I need it pack with herbal taste. (this do not really apply in Klang area)

Klang Bkt (8)

I would advise you to reach before 9am as by the time we reach at 9am, most of the parts that we wanted were gone, and we were lucky to enjoy these last 2 pieces of bone.

woo Pin Fish Head Noodles is no stranger to many food hunters out there. Till date, there are mix reviews about this place where it is love and hate relationship. Some love it and some feels overrated. I am rewritting this post where recently my best friend came down and requested for this place as what they heard the best Fish Head Noodle.

If to compare with Penang, we do not have such fish head noodles with milk base where that is only the differences.

Woo Pin (1)

BOKA8772

Woo Pin had been operating in this neighborhood for many years that came to my first visit back in 2009 where my first blog post was.

Woo Pin (3)

We came for late lunch, to avoid the massive crazy crowd.

Woo Pin (4)

Woo Pin (5)

Woo Pin (6)

My friend ordered Fresh Prawn Noodles with Fried Fish Head is one of a more expensive bowl. As for mine, the usual order I will go for is a mixture, Fish Paste and Fried Fish Head Noodle. Soup base here is still pungent from sour vegetable, not too solid in taste where it is just nice and still love their fish paste.

Woo Pin (7)

Woo Pin (8)

Fried Foo Chuck to go along with our noodles and their home made sambal is a blast of sweat where it is very spicy with sour end. Great to dip along with fish paste or any other dishes if you love challenges of spicy in taste.

Woo Pin (9)

The serving is quite big yet it’s sure worth the price that you are paying. Surely I will be returning to this place.

This round, I visited back some of the places that I have not been to for ages where Jelutong Market house many nice hawker stalls. A few of them are pretty well known to the locals and Hussain Mee Goreng is one of a stall that had been around for at least two decades, since when I was a kid. Till date still one of the most busy stall that well known for its sloopy cook version of mee goreng using their special customize stove fire. .

mee goreng (2)

They are well known for an average waiting time from 20 minutes to an hour where alot people will flock in for them. This version of mee goreng are the most classic of all where it is cook plain with their own special sauce and fried along in fiery fire.

mee goreng (3)

Their quality is still similiar from the last round I had which is about 10 years ago, drench in their own special gravy, that filled with potato, egg, bean sprout, squid and lime for you to add on some acidic in it. Best to cook it slightly extra spicy. @ RM 4

Their Mee Rebus which is the soup base is pretty well known too. Worth to give it a try.

Another one of my favourite mee goreng with sotong is Hameed.

Where cafe are too main stream, my best friend introduce me to one of his all time favourite local coffee which known by many working people in this huge industrial area. Poh Hock Cafe is establish since 1994 and also one of the most outstanding stall among other 100 other vendors in this huge food court in Sunshine Market Food Court.

Poh hock Cafe (1)

Poh hock Cafe (3)

They have white coffee which I find it not that interesting as it taste to me like from the 3in1 packet although it is serve with froth on it. So I ordered and tried both and I must say that their Coffee is indeed good. Not the usual typical coffee in those kopitiam that you get as the taste of it is solid, sightly creamy and the after taste is very unique where you have those local coffee after taste but then in the end there is a nice aroma tweak in it.

I guess that is their secret recipe after all. Good coffee at RM 1.60 and totally no complain. I can have 2 glass a day with this kind of version.

Another of my all time favourite classic local coffee is this Ah Lai Coffee Shop.

Famous Ayer Itam Assam Laksa @ Penang

Penang is indeed a food heaven where there have been tons of features from international coverage on many locations in Penang, along with famous international host such as Anthony Bourdain and a few other countries famous TV host. . I guess I am the odd one where I have not really actually tried before this Famous Ayer Itam Assam Laksa that located in Ayer Itam Market which is only 5 minutes drive away from my house.

Stumbling block to this place is always a headache in both finding carpark space and also tons of crowd waiting for it in this limited seating area.

ayer itam laksa (3)

Well, during this Chinese New Year decided to make a break to it by bringing my KL friend to dine here on their request and was great enough not as pack as I thought.

ayer itam laksa (2)

ayer itam laksa (4)

Each bowl of Assam Laksa will be bath 2-3 rounds in this pippin hot soup before add in final round of soup and serve it out.

ayer itam laksa (6)

Penang Assam Laksa is filled with fine slices of cucumber, onion, mint leaves, red chilli, bunga kantan and prawn paste, (some other hawker stalls do add in pineapple)

ayer itam laksa (7)

On the first dip carrying it up, you will dig thru a generous side of vegetable and as you dig deeper, you will find their signature laksa noodle which is silky smooth, soft and slightly chewy. Soup is indeed rich in flavours, as you can see a sea of shredded fish meat that make the soup quite thick, along with hint of spiciness soup, along with some other taste as acidity and mint turmeric end.

ayer itam laksa

Here you go on one of Penang famous pippin hot street food, Assam Laksa and do not be dissapointed as the owner’s brother now have a branch in KL where it is located in Klang known as Angcle Peoh.

This place had been regard as one of a Top Hakwer food to eat whenver you visit Penang.

Heard alot about this place and only manage to came by visit once when half drunk 2-3 years ago and still remember clearly it does taste good. Not till recently with my new job and I am base at Jalan Alor and visited this place once so called famous Ngau Kee Beef Noodles, to me now is no longer a great one.

Ngau Kee (1)

It used to have a huge crowd for it and I reach around 9pm and there were only a few tables.

Ngau Kee (2)

Style of setting up still the same and now the difference is only foreigners is managing it now while the owner is at the side chit chatting with friends.

Ngau Kee (4)

Ngau Kee (5)

Their signature is their home made chili sauce that is mild spicy yet fragrant with some herb taste along with sourish end.

Ngau Kee (6)

I ordered their signature which is Dry mix Beef Noodle, top with mince meat and a side bowl of mix spare parts at RM 9

Ngau Kee (7)

Ngau Kee (9)

Noodle is alright as pretty much the same with wan tan mee noodles.

Then went back another round for their soup base and surely to say that their quality had dropped so much, where the soup base is no longer pungent in taste and blend where I believe there are better ones out there.

I am a fan of steamboat, where there are certainly many kinds out there, not to mention Coco Steamboat is well known for their pork bone broth soup base that gives you a kick in their flavor according to many diners out there. This round, we were treated with one of their latest version of steamboat which is really steam from the broth underneath.

coco steamboat (1)

If you are Cheras folks, you might know them as now they have shifted from their old shop to this brand newly renovated restaurant just down the road from where they previously occupied. I am quite impress with them as they do hire a security with weapon equip for safety of diners.

For their new version of steamboat, they called it Sauna steamboat and they have sets for you to choose or you can pick back their ala carte menu.

For a start, their fried home made beancurd and wonton is a must order as both are filled with generous ingredients in it.

coco steamboat (7)

We got set C where most of the fresh seafood is in it and thinking of sauna, this would be the best combination of all.

coco steamboat (9)

Original pot will be serve in this version where white cabbage is serve on the top and their superior broth is at the bottom.

coco steamboat (11)

coco steamboat (12)

coco steamboat (12.1)

coco steamboat (13)

How this is eaten where all the fresh seafood being place nicely on the top of the cabbage, then cover with the lid and let it steam for 5-15  minutes depending on the ingredients that you ordered. First you get to eat those seafood fresh, secondly all the seafood sweetness of their aroma and steam effect drip into the broth below. Right after you finish all the seafood and take the metal base lid up and enjoy the superior soup base at the bottom, where it is include with special rice to make it a mini porridge too.

Soup is pack with flavour and I had 4 bowls of soup after that. Their home made chili is a bomb.

coco steamboat (14)

If you are really hungry and ready to eat, then Sauna steamboat is not advisable as it takes you quite a while to finish the ingredients that you order. Still a great new version of steamboat on my encounter.

In Penang, there are tons of hawker food to hunt for, as there is this particular kopitiam that located inside this neighborhood – Island Glades that I will know miss. Genting cafe Kopitiam that located in this area had already been well known to the locals here since 2 decades ago where my high school is just located right beside it.

genting kopitiam (1)

This kopitiam recently had sold off its stake to a new owner and it had then refurbish a whole new clean look and spacious. A place which is well know to many of us where great street food can be found such as, Chinese Apom Balik that usually filled with banana slices or corn.

genting kopitiam (7)

This is how the new kopitiam looks like, with higer ceilings and not that hot anymore, yet looks clean.

genting kopitiam (8)

My all time favorite that I would not miss is this chee cheong fun, as their shrimp paste they have a special home recipe in it that make them different compare to the others, also another of their special ingredient in it is peanut butter.

genting kopitiam (9)

Duck Meat Koey Teow Soup

I have encounter quite number of Melaka famous pork satay and till I am not too sure which is the better ones. However, this was one of the most recent one that was recommended and it was by luck we reach early and got a spot immediately. Pork Satay at Lung Aun Kopitiam which just only a street away from Jonker street is one of a coffee shop you should drop by if you are moving around by foot.

Lung Aun Kopitian (1)

Lung Aun Kopitian (2)

A kopitiam that is well known for their Pork Satay and their classic servings of toast from the coffee owner themselves.

Lung Aun Kopitian (3)

This are the only choices for you to hunt for and upon ordering, average waiting time can be 15 minutes – 60 minutes depending on your luck as there are quite number or order for take away.

Lung Aun Kopitian (4)

Lung Aun Kopitian (6)

While waiting for your satay, you can order the kopitiam famous kopi and their toast set which is quite similiar to Penang by using charcoal as the base for toast bread.

Lung Aun Kopitian (7)

We were told by one of the regular, it used to be much better as they do not serve with the plastic egg mug for the egg to cook, where they used to use the silver cans and pour hot water in it. Toast here are serve very flat with their home version of bread, along by spreading with homemade kaya and butter.

Lung Aun Kopitian (8)

0

Our order is serve with pig intestine and their classic pork series. One great flavours in their item is their peanut sauce. Its fragrant with mild peanut and taste a bit with their special spices where topping with their chilli oil enhance it.

Lung Aun Kopitian (9)

What I have read in many blogs that this satay stall, opens whenever they feels like it. To hunt for this shop and they are open, means it is fated for you to dine in. Most of the people purposely travel here for their satay and the old couple that I share table with, both of them finish 60 sticks. That’s crazy.

According to them (the old couple), in the morning, this shop also well known for their fish head bee hoon where the noodle is home made by the uncle himself and the flavors had maintain since the first day they had it. His business hours is from 7am-9am or 10am only. Will come back to try that.

Before you sit down, you will be attack by a group of sales people from the individual stall for drinks business. As you sat down then the server will start putting in their respective food stall onto your talbe and feel free to pick what you like.

In this food court, most of the people are here for nasi lemak and there are 2 provider.

The usual servings will be 2 different type of nasi lemak from Blue stall and Red Stall, follow by 3 different stall of Otak Otak – from Pink, Black and yellow. Other waiter will drop by your table asking you to order other items such as mutton/chicken soup, laksa, mee goreng and others.

Lets start off with the Red Chop as when you are seated, there are nasi lemak bungkus with red chop. If you head to their main stall, you might see some people queuing for take away and it is also famous for their fried chicken.

Their fried chicken is pretty good as fried with their own marination and ‘rempah’ to go along also the chicken is not too dry. I do not usually take chicken breast however this chicken breast is still moist and juicy. I add on with three scoop of their sambal @ RM 3

nasi lemak 222 (9)

Next, lets head to another stall which I call them Blue stall. If you head to their main stall, you will be greeted with variety of malay economy rice where you can choose to add on their crispy fried chicken or other dishes.

I call this Penang Laksa Malay version @ RM 4.50 as the soup base is very different compare to Asam Laksa. Nearly similar ingredients as Asam laksa, where their soup is pretty thick with fish meat base is good too. Just that the soup is not pippin hot.

New folder4

Both stalls have their own customer base and let me break down for you.

  1. Red Stall packet – their sambal is slightly sweeter, and rice is less fragrant
  2. Blue Stall packet – their sambal is more spicy and rice is slightly fragrant with with coconut. (my personal favourite)

This will depends your individual taste as you can try both pack at one go as both the pack are quite small. If I remember correctly, I used to have it from RM0.80 then to RM1, then to RM 1.20 and now I believe is RM 1.50 per pack.

Ah Leng Famous Char Koey Teow @ Dato Keramat, Penang

For Char Koey Teow in Penang, which which one would emerge as one of the best? Till date, if I were to recommend one of the best in Penang, I would be lost of selection. However, Ah Leng Char Koey Teow is emerage as one of the best and usually I eat the one his elder brother fried which is at Ayer Itam area and for this branch is his younger brother that is doing the job for afternoon to evening session.

Ah Leng Ckt (1)

I remember that they used to operate in an old kopitiam which is right opposite: Khoon Hiang Cafe as now they are currently operating in Restaurant Tong Hooi. Under this establishment, I overhead a regular mention that famous chicken rice used to operate in the same kopitiam as ah Leng has also move into this kopitiam to operate.

Ah Leng Ckt (2)

Parking here can be a big problem as you can park right next to it by paying RM 3 per entry, in a restaurant compound.

Ah Leng Ckt (3)

This version of Ah Leng Char Koey Teow is slightly different from others where it is slightly moist from their own soup stock that they add in as per compare to the usual CKT version, it is fried to dry with wok hei.

Ah Leng homenade soup stock kept the aroma and pungent taste of it while cook with duck egg by adding extra cockles just make the taste even better. The usual will always add in with 2 big prawns at RM 7 along with Ah Leng Special version is by adding in mantis prawns ranging from RM 8-RM12.

Ah Leng Ckt (4)

I still like my CKT fried with wok hei and dry version, however there are still friends of mine love this version. Shall leave it to your decision to choose which version you like.

Famous BBQ Pork (Char Siew) & Chicken Rice at Hong Seng @ Section 17, PJ

[repost from year 2011] – updated pictures with all broken links.

In this neighborhood, I always thought that the area only I know is on the Food Foundry area that side which only filled with food to hunt. . never did I know that actually there is another small kopitiam area located on another side of it which is quite famous for its lunch crowd among all my colleague and one of the shop that they introduce me which is Hong Seng Kopitiam which is famous for its BBQ Pork (Char Siew) and also their Chicken Rice..

Chicken Rice (1)

Left office around 12.30pm where was told to head there earlier to avoid the crazy queue. When I reach, the queue is already up to the next 2 shop lot.

Chicken Rice (2)

Chicken Rice (3)

Just a simple chicken rice stall like that which is only famous for its BBQ pork can attract many pork lovers out there. Roast pork hanging and the feel and look of it doesn’t attract me much, also decided to give it a try.

Chicken Rice (4)

Chicken Rice (5)

Then we order the Char Siew of 6 pax, that comes in whole big plate like this with a bit mix of Roast pork and chicken was not in the list cuz they said its not good. BBQ pork is good, with burn end is crisp, soft juicy meat that well coated with their own special sauce and I just cant stop eating it. Roast Pork did not impress me that much as I had better ones before, as here the head is not that crispy as I like and the meat is quite dry  even though the meat with fats are my type just doesn’t give me a kick in it.

Chicken Rice (7)

Ahhh, this sure impress all of us, sour and spicy soup, which is quite sour enough that boiled till a bit messy with the ingredients and just lack of not spicy enough. If it had add a bit more of dry chili then would be perfect but no complain as their version win a lot of places.

Chicken Rice (9)

Then I saw next table order some pig innards then I was wondering where to order that, its located behind section operate by a old uncle that sell s porridge and I order pig intestine which is good! Chewy, and flavorful from the soy sauce he is cooking. RM 8 for this portion which is pretty reasonable. . .

Chicken Rice (8)

Our whole lunch meal comes to a total of RM8 per pax after divided out with 6 pax.. which is a good value and satisfy . . I would say, just attack the BBQ pork here, do try out others too if you like . . Just be there early to avoid the heavy lunch crowd at 1pm.

Yut Kee had been nearly all my friends favourite for a Hainanese breakfast especially with their toast and pork chop. Oh well, this is another post where just to mention now they have move to a new premises, just right behind their old shop. Parking still is a major problem however never prevents their loyal customer from flocking in.

yut kee (1)

yut kee (2)

This new outlet now offer more bigger waiting area with more seating arrangement where customer now can wait comfortably for a table and please do always remember give your name to the owner as part of the waiting list whom is wearing spec that always park himself right at the cashier then wait your name to be called. It is manual but their accuracy is 100%.

yut kee (3)

Bigger dining space yet they have still maintain their classic heritage look with a little twist of  modern lighting in it.

yut kee (4)

Menu still the same . .

This round, ordered something more which is their Hainan Noodle that serve in thick version, not too salty yet just something simple and direct.

Till date, their crowd never fade off and it is still like a warzone in this area. Even more crazy if its weekend. Do prepare to wait at least 15-45 minutes depending on your timing.

My best friend loves crab. Whenver he is down, he would always ask to look for crab place to eat or even Sang Har Noodles, then we head to this family joint at PJ that is always pack with customers. Then only found out that Restaurant Green View is actually one of a well know restaurant to many family diners that located directly across Lisa De Inn Hotel.

Green View (1)

Green View (2)

Variety of crab is available here and depending what kind of dish we ordered and what is the recommendations from the manager and my friend he placed ordered that night as I reached late.

Green View (3)

One of a famous dish in this restaurant is this Sang Har Noodle, where prawns are fresh with juicy solid prawn meat, gravy is just nice where it is not too creamy or yolky that goes well with fried noodle as the base.

Green View (4)

Next 2 dishes were crab where one of it  is with their famous sweet and sour sauce, where we do order extra man tou to dip along with it. Sourish enough with their own chef recepi and perfect. Crab meat were solid too.

When comes to our baked crab where it was recommended to get the Australian crab which is slightly more expensive and we agreed. The taste came out is totally different where it does have some salty sea taste of it and freshness of meat is just spot on.

Green View (5)

Green View (6)

Last dish to go on was just a normal fried veggie and our bill came up to around RM 550, with both crab had weighted around 3.5kg. Great dinner and great catch up.

This restaurant also offer great Dai chow dish if you do not fancy saang har noodle or crab.

My first time here reporting to work and did not know there are so many shops right beside us. So I just pick Restaurant Gou Lou – Famous Fish Head Noodle & Tom Yum Seafood. After dining only I realize this shop is quite famous.

Gou Lou (1)

Gou Lou (2)

For this shop, they are famous for 2 things. One is their well known fish head bee hoon and next is their tom yum seafood  noodle that serve in fiery red that will guarantee you drench in sweat. Besides that, they do have other items for you to try on.

Gou Lou (3)

Gou Lou (4)

My breakfast is Fish Head noodle @ RM 10 and I think it is quite decently price as I felt they are generous in ingredinets. In my bowl of noodle, I can easily identify at least 4-5 pieces of pretty decent piece of fried fish.

Gou Lou (5)

Soup base is aromatic, where they mix with sour veggie to enhance the sourish taste of it and milk to make it slightly creamy. A great breakfast to begin with.

Gou Lou (6)

Do drop by to Jalan Alor on the morning to afternoon side to discover more on their street food.
